The analysis tabs
The Analysis plugin for the deSide Client is your tool to extract historical data from your deSide Database. Like the Display plugin, it consists of a number of sub-tabs, each allowing you to perform a different type of analysis on the deSide data. Each sub-tab in the Analysis plugin is organised in a similar fashion, the main difference being the data that they display. The sub-tabs available in the deSide Client are Trends (Market), Duration (Market), Curtailment Summary and Predispatch Convergence. The image below shows the 4 tabs as they appear in the application.
The general structure of any analysis sub-tab is a number of root containers called Querys. Within each root container, there will be a number of Inputs. Each Input is basically a request for what you want the analysis sub-tab to display, generally defined as a simple English phrase.
If you were working on the Trends (Market) sub-tab, you might have
an Input that was:
Show me the raw 30 minute price in Queensland between 01 Dec 2007 12:00 AM and 30 Dec 2007 12:00 AM.
As you can see, this Input has been defined as a straight-forward English phrase, this allows you to focus on the wording of your
request, rather than having to use a complicated equation based system. This system is easy to understand, and easy to use, just
spell out what you want see, as if you were saying it to someone else.
Within the Analysis component, Inputs are representing as a single cog, while Queries are represented as a group of 3 cogs interlocked together.
Creating a Query
When you initially click on any of the Analysis tabs, you will be able to see an information screen. At the top of this information screen is a toolbar containing the buttons that allow you to manipulate queries. These buttons are, in order from left to right, New Query, Load Query, Save Query, Remove Query and Rename Query. You can see a screenshot of this toolbar below (in this screenshot all buttons are enabled, this will not be the case when you initially click on a sub-tab).
|
|
| Button | Description |
| New Query | Create a new Query. When clicked, prompts you for a name for your query, then displays a new tab representing your Query. |
| Load Query | Load a previously saved Query. When clicked, prompts you for the location of your saved Query, then loads the saved information into a new tab representing the saved Query. |
| Save Query | Save your currently selected Query. When clicked, prompts you to name the file that will store this Query's information. |
| Remove Query | Delete the currently selected Query. When clicked, this will delete the Query you have selected (i.e. the Query on your currently selected tab). |
| Rename Query | Renames the currently selected Query. When clicked, prompts you for a new name for the Query. This name is displayed on the tab for that Query. |
Initially, while the information screen is still visible, all buttons except New Query and Load Query will be greyed out and unable to be clicked on. This is because you need to have a Query initialised on the screen before you can really do anything. At this stage you will either need to create a new Query, or load a previously saved Query to continue. Once you do this, all of the Query toolbar buttons will become enabled, and the information screen will disappear, to be replaced by a tab representing your Query.
Using your Query
After you initalise a Query, you will see the Query represented as a tab on the screen, below the Query toolbar. On this tab is the name of the Query (the red area in the image below), the Input Toolbar (the dark blue area in the image), a drop-down box where you can select an Input (the green area), the actual Input plain-text description (the purple area), the calculate button (the yellow area) and finally the graph area itself (the pale blue area).
In the image above, the selected Query does not have any Inputs in it (as it is brand new, rather than loaded from a previously saved file) , which is why the screen looks incomplete, and there are options disabled. The first thing you need to do after you create a brand new Query, is to create a New Input within that Query, you have to tell the Query "I want to display something". You do this by clicking on the New Input button. Once you have completed this step, the top of the Query tab will look similar to this.
As you can see, the Input Toolbar (the blue area) now has all buttons enabled, the drop-down box (the green area), has an input selected and the plain-text description of the input (the purple area) has now got text in it. At this stage the graph is still displaying nothing, because the newly created Input has not yet been configured and calculated (which is similar to saving any changes you may have done to that Input). Configuring an Input is simple. In the purple area is a straight-forward description of the Input, with some parts of the text clickable (like a web-page link). If you click on any of these sections, you will be able to change the option for that section. Once your Input says what you want it to say, you merely need to click on the Calculate button, and the Input will be calculated, and displayed in the graph area (which was the pale blue area in the image above). Inputs must be Calculated before they will be displayed on the graph.
You can continue to add new Inputs to your Query, and configure then display them in the same way as previously explained.
Supplementary Information
- Each Analysis sub-tab has a different plain-text description for its Inputs, but is otherwise the same in general structure. You can view detailed information about each sub-tab by following the links at the top of this page.
- The Input Toolbar also allows you to Delete, Copy and Rename Inputs.
- There is a small checkbox in the upper-right hand corner of your Query's Tab that allows you to highlight a selected Input on the graph.
- The drop-down box that allows you to select Inputs will also tell you if that Input has been Calculated.
- The charts in the chart area can be modified by clicking on the Edit button at the top left-hand corner of the chart.
- You can view the raw data for a series on any graph by clicking on the "View the Data in Tabulated Form" button above the graph.
